Finding the right iPhone App Developer

June 13th, 2010

When people have an iPhone app idea, what’s the first thing they do. Well from what I have heard a lot of people search Google, Yahoo, Bing for iPhone app developers.  You will find a few on Google, and other search engines, but how do you know you are getting the right developer for you?

Well ask your self this, are you going for quality in programming code, a budget iPhone app development, or are you just doing it for the sake of it. Well a lot of people I have come across haven’t really thought hard about their application let alone finding the right iPhone App developer.

There are nearly 500,000 apps in the app store, and if you are looking to get an iPhone app made do think hard about who you choose to develop your iPhone app as it may just get lost in the thousands of apps out there. We realized that you must have a digital agency behind you that also knows how to market your app to the right places.

Nowadays it’s not as simple as just getting an iPhone app developer to build your app, but also to have a digital agency to know how to market your app too, i.e. getting the right Virals together, Email Newsletters and Social Networking in place. We at The Sound Pipe Media offer both services to our clients, and with proven success we have pushed our app Tumbi Nut to the Top 4 Music Apps in the App Store.

So next time, you are looking for an iPhone App developer also think about how you will market your app as this can sometimes make or break it.

Apple iPad: Some devices delivered early

May 27th, 2010

Apple has started shipping pre-ordered iPads to customers ahead of the official launch tomorrow, and some lucky gadget fans have already received their device.

Although the iPad doesn’t officially go on sale until 8am on Friday morning, some pre-order units of the touch-screen, tablet-style computer have been delivered a day early. Apple fans have been posting information about their shipments on forums and blogs, stating that the devices are “out for delivery” and en route to customers.

On Twitter, dozens of people have been celebrating the early arrival of their iPad. “My iPad has just arrived (1 day early),” wrote one Twitter user, Will Sheward. “UPS delivery guy says he’s delivering lots today. I get the impression his van is full of them.”

Gadget fans are expected to queue through the night to be among the first to get their hands on the iPad. Apple will be opening its 27 stores at 8am tomorrow for eager shoppers, while more than 100 branches of Currys and PC World will be stocking the device. Neither high street store has been expecting pre-orders, so stock will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Apple iPad has proved popular with shoppers in the United States, where more than a million tablets were sold in the first 28 days of release. Vijay Rakesh, an analyst with Sterne Agee, believes Apple has been producing between 1 and 1.5 million iPads per month, and will be scaling up production to roll out around 2.5 million iPads from September onwards.

iPhone Leapfrogs BlackBerry As The #1 Handset For Opera Mini In The US

May 3rd, 2010

Opera just released its latest State of the Mobile Web report, in which it zooms in on the popularity of its iPhone application, which was approved for the App Store just a little over two weeks ago.

We already knew a lot of people were seemingly eager to try out the alternative browser on the iPhone – the app saw 1 million dowloads on its first day in the store.

But how is it holding up now?

According to the just-released report, the iPhone has now become the third most popular handset for Opera Mini users worldwide. All the other top 20 devices are Nokia and Sony Ericsson handsets. Furthermore, the iPhone is currently the #1 device used by Opera Mini users in the United States, well ahead of BlackBerry, which previously occupied the top spot.

Out of the top 10 countries according to Opera Mini usage, the United States and the United Kingdom are the two countries where the iPhone has become the #1 device used by Opera Mini users.

According to preliminary numbers, Opera expects the US to soon have the fifth-most Opera Mini users, displacing Nigeria, South Africa and Ukraine on its ascent up the list. Since mid-April, the States jumped from #8 to #5 in the top 10 countries list.

As for the actual state of the mobile web on a global level, according to Opera:

In March 2010, Opera Mini had over 55.2 million users, a 9.3% increase from February 2010. Combined, those users viewed more than 25.8 billion pages in March. Since March 2009, page views have increased 200%.

Steve Jobs Responds To iPhone SDK Complaints: ‘Intermediate Layers Produce Sub-Standard Apps’

April 11th, 2010

Over the last few days, the web has been awash with news that Apple has changed its iPhone developer SDK agreement to ban the use of “applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer”, which nullifies Adobe’s upcoming Flash-to-iPhone conversion tool and may also ban many other developer tools. Despite heated reactions from Adobe and many developers, Apple has remained silent on the change

However, it looks like Steve Jobs may have just broken through the wall of silence to address the changes to Section 3.3.1 — via an email exchange with a developer. Greg Slepak, CEO of TaoEffect, emailed Jobs to voice his concerns and got a pair of brief responses, which he has posted to his site. In his first message to Jobs, Slepak included a link to a highly negative thread on Hacker News where many developers criticized the move. Jobs responded. In the post that Jobs refers to, Daring Fireball’s John Gruber explains the logic that was behind Apple’s move (and given Jobs’ endorsement of the article, it looks like he was spot on). The gist of the article is that Apple doesn’t want a ‘meta-platform’ to exist between the iPhone and developers, as this would facilitate simultaneous development for competitors’ platforms and give Apple less control over the iPhone ecosystem. But while Gruber’s article is well thought out and very logical, I don’t think it does much to address why developers are furious. The issue isn’t that developers don’t understand why Apple is doing this — it’s that the actions Apple is taking to protect its own interests are violating something fundamental: they’re keeping developers from using the tools they want to work with.

Video Chat Coming To The Next iPhone? All Signs Are Pointing To Yes

April 11th, 2010

As they do with any major new iPhone OS release, people have been tearing apart the iPhone OS 4.0 SDK from the very second it was available. Almost immediately, someone noticed that bits and pieces of iChat had found their way into the new software.
By itself, it didn’t really make sense. The iPhone has plenty of incredibly solid third-party IM applications — some of them being amongst the App Store’s best sellers. Why would Apple be sneaking any parts of iChat onto the iPhone? Then the first mentions of a front facing camera were unearthed, and it all started coming together in the form of two little words: video chat. Alas, there was no concrete proof that Apple was following the same train of thought.. until now.

You see, much of iPhone OS’ underpinnings can be revealed through tricks called “class dumping” and “string dumping”. Through class dumping, you can take a peek into which frameworks and APIs are being used by any given application. (Ever heard of an application using “unpublished” APIs? This is how the developers found those APIs in the first place — and how Apple caught them, for that matter.) Through string dumping, all of the various bits of text pre-programmed into an app can be ripped out and displayed.
